Bay at night

Cover artwork I continue experimenting with the algorithm used to generate "Bay". With minimal modifications in the ngen code, I generated a new piece with a completely different mood, much more atonal and dark.

You can listen to a 4 minute excerpt (in ogg-vorbis format), or download the source code (CSD) if you want to generate the complete 30 minute piece. This time I'm not releasing the ngen source, because the algorithm is virtually the same than the already published in "Bay". However, if interested, leave a comment.

I rendered my own wave file, and I like the piece very much, it's a good follow-up to the previous version. However, I think it needs a little bit of adjustment on the output level -- it is mostly fine, but there are places where I hear clipping (distortion) at the higher amplitudes, and I also noticed some Csound warnings about "samples out of range", which is another indication of an amplitude problem.

Looking forward to hearing (and studying) more of your work in the future!

Thanks Dave! I fixed that problem and posted a new csd. Thanks to the existence of a global mixer, I had to change a single number in the CSD (the output gain of the mixer).

Much better, Jose. I still get a little bit of clipping on some of the larger swells (esp. low-frequencies), but much much less, and the Csound compiler outout now shows only 5 samples out of range.

By the way, have you considered doing a variant that uses some form of just intonation rather than equasl temperment? Could be very interesting!

The atmosphere created by this piece is very evocative, sort of a science fiction/noir effect, would have worked well with something like "Blade Runner".
